Each time I guide a forest therapy walk, I pause to remember who the therapist and healer is: the natural world. Each time I coach a client, I ground myself in the truth that there is an expert present, one with deep knowledge of the client’s circumstances, strengths, needs, and desires: the client themself.
This is the magic of a nature-immersive coaching session: there are two healers, two experts present. And then there’s me. I’m there to open doors, to ease connection, to attend to your safety, to offer questions and invitations to get the magic moving. But the magic? That’s inside of you and inside of nature itself (of which we are all a part).
Every nature-immersive coaching session is unique. Whether we are physically together in the woods or meeting virtually from our own separate green spaces, I come ready to respond to the vagaries of weather, the delightful unpredictability of flora and fauna, and to the delightfully unpredictable, every-shifting realities of you. You are not the same today as you were yesterday. You have exhaled carbon, metabolized food, and absorbed new-to-you atoms. Perhaps some belief or another has grown a little stronger, and another has loosened its hold. Some new opportunity or challenge has entered your life.
A nature-immersive coaching session is a deep and supported practice of being present with whatever is—the cardinal flitting overhead, the anxiety fluttering inside your chest, the light cascading down the sides of sycamores, the lightness you feel when you imagine letting go of that thing. There is more silence in a nature-immersive coaching session than in a traditional coaching session. There is space for play, discovery, exploration, rest, and sitting with the feelings that are asking to be felt.
Like in a conventional coaching session, I will ask you if there is a question, problem, goal, fear, or feeling that you’ve brought with you that you want to focus on that day. And just like in a guided forest bathing walk, I will offer tailored-to-you invitations to help you relax into connection with the world around you. This back and forth between intervals of talking together and quiet stretches of sensory connection with nature will typically repeat several times in the course of a session. Over and over, I witness the same magic unfold: without hours of talking or intense left-brain analysis, clients drop into a heightened state of awareness, a deeper sense of peace and clarity, or a sudden capacity to allow themselves to feel the thing they’ve been avoiding feeling.
Will nature-immersive coaching “fix” you? No. You don’t need fixing. But what you’re likely to find is that this fusion of forest bathing and coaching supports you in rooting more deeply in the soil of your present moment, and from that rooted place, you will find yourself growing more joyfully or creatively in the direction of your own unique beauty.
